With over different exhibitions and events, some 30 visitors are expected. Organized by the Central Committee of German Catholics, the event is so important and influential, that in attendance are not only the leading members of the German Catholic Church, but also senior politicians.

For the Church, the President of the German Catholic Bishops Conference Cardinal Reinhard Marx, is taking part, and also Cardinal Karl Lehmann , the lgbt supportive Archbishop Heiner Koch of Berlin, and other notable prelates. Pope Francis sent a pre-recorded message for delivery to the assembly.

For the state, the German President delivered the opening day keynote address, while a cabinet minister, a state premier, and others from all major parties except one were also present. Prominently in attendance, present by direct and explicit invitation to promote lgbt inclusion in church, are three countrywide LGBT advocacy groups: Netzwerk katholischer Lesben the Catholic Lesbian Network , Arbeitsgruppe Homosexuelle und Kirche HuK Workgroup Homosexuals and Church , and Initiative Kirche von unten , a progressive grass-roots organization that actively advocates for LGBT inclusion.

Last November, Ruby Almeida, Hazel Barnes, Sandy Taylor and I met some people from HuK at the Rome conference of the Global Network of Rainbow Catholics. I met them, and others, again in Gothenburg this month, at the conference of the Europen Forum of Christian LGBT groups.

This is of major importance — the German hierarchy takes the ZdK very seriously indeed. This is the first time ever that German homosexual groups are officially welcome at the Katholikentag. In fact, the presence of Kaufmann with three of the most important gay and lesbian Catholic advocacy groups in the country shows that the ZdK is willing to take an openly progressive position, and controversial in equal measure, with regards to the type of church it wants to promote.

Kaufmann as well as the Catholic Lesbian Network and the Workgroup Homosexuals and Church have been invited by organizers to present their work on the open integration of sexual minorities to the Catholic church. But not the entire political spectrum is represented in Leipzig.

Saxony is the heart of the most recent right-wing populist political movements in Germany. And indeed, much has been made of the fact that the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany AfD was not asked to participate in the events. Thomas Sternberg, president of the ZdK, was asked about it during the press conference.

For the organizers, the strong anti-immigration agenda of the AfD is incompatible with the internationalism, openness and demand of hospitality that Catholicism places on the members of the church. Nach guten Erfahrungen beim evangelischen Kirchentag wird es in diesem Jahr beim Katholikentag in Leipzig erstmals einen von LGBT-Organisationen eingerichteten Treffpunkt für LGBT-Gläubige geben.

Zum Katholikentag, der in diesem Jahr vom Organisiert wird das Zentrum vom Netzwerk katholischer Lesben , der ökumenischen Arbeitsgruppe Homosexuelle und Kirche HuK sowie der amtskirchenkritischen Initiative Kirche von unten. Diese drei Organisationen betonen, dass sie auf ausdrückliche Einladung des Zentralkomitees der deutschen Katholiken ZdK bei der Laienveranstaltung römisch-katholischer Gläubiger dabei sein werden.

Das ZdK hat bereits in der Vergangenheit mehr Offenheit der Kirche gegenüber Homosexuellen gefordert. So sprach sich die Laienvertretung vergangenes Jahr in ihrer Vollversammlung für die Segnung von gleichgeschlechtlichen Paaren aus queer. Allerdings verteidigte ZdK-Chef Thomas Sternberg kürzlich das diskriminierende kirchliche Arbeitsrecht, das nach wie vor erlaubt, Mitarbeiter wegen ihrer Homosexualität zu feuern queer.

Die meisten Veranstaltungen sollen auch ins offizielle Programm des Katholikentages aufgenommen werden. Eine katholische Einrichtung konnte man aber nicht für das Regenbogenzentrum gewinnen. Statt dessen hat die Evangelische Michaelis-Friedens-Gemeinde in Leipzig beschlossen, mit der Friedenskirche und dem angeschlossenen Gemeindezentrum im Ortsteil Gohlis-Süd Gastgeberin zu sein.

Kirche und Gemeindezentrum befinden sich am Kirchplatz, der vom Leipziger Hauptbahnhof binnen zehn Minuten erreichbar ist.

Aktive gay community in leipzig: engagiert und vernetzt

Am Samstag wollen dort die Gruppen einen ökumenischen Gottesdienst feiern. Schwule und Lesben nehmen bereits seit aktiv am Katholikentag teil. Es gab hierüber allerdings auch immer wieder Auseinandersetzungen.
